The BeIDConnect extension is provided by the Federal Public Service Policy and Support (FPS P&S), which is located in the WTC III building, Boulevard Simon Bolivar 30, 1000 Brussels (www.bosa.fgov.be).
The BeIDConnect extension is a technical component that users have to download and install themselves to allow the browser they have selected to launch the BeIDConnect software. The BeIDConnect software enables communication with the Belgian electronic identity card (eID). The BeIDConnect software allows the eID card to be read, allows the holder to authenticate himself by using his eID card or allows him to create an electronic signature by using his eID card.
Only belgium.be and fgov.be websites can make use of the BeIDConnect extension. These websites are operated by institutions of the Belgian federal government such as the FPS Justice, the FPS Economy, social security institutions, etc. Only belgium.be and fgov.be websites can make use of the BeIDConnect extension to create an electronic signature.
In practice, this means that when an electronic signature needs to be created, the belgium.be or fgov.be website in question will use the BeIDConnect extension, which will then use the BeIDConnect software, which in turn will use the eID card.
Providing the extension and installing it will not result in the processing of personal data by the FPS P&S as processor or as controller.
However, when the belgium.be or fgov.be website in question uses the eID via the BeIDConnect extension and the BeIDConnect software to create an electronic signature, personal data will be processed. Since the FPS P&S only provides the BeIDConnect software and BeIDConnect extension for installation and use by the users themselves, it has no insight into the exact use of personal data by the belgium.be or fgov.be websites of the relevant government institutions. We therefore refer to the privacy statements of these government institutions.
